As Covid -19 spread through the world last month, I was getting very worried about my mother as she is old. Unfortunately, Health infrastructure is nowhere near where it should be in India. According to the Johns Hopkins CSSE website as of 20-05-2020, there were more than 4.911900 documented cases worldwide and 323,637 deaths. This virus is more dangerous for older people and pharma companies all around the world told us that a Covid -19 treatment or vaccine will take at least six months. Six months is a long time to be locked down so I knew the countries will have to open within 2-3 months and that is when most people will get infected by it. Therefore, I started to research on Covid -19 treatment experiments across the world.
Nearly a month ago, while researching Covid -19 treatment, I came across Dr Vladimir (Zev) Zelenko – who had treated 1,450 Covid-19 patients at that time. Out of 1,450 he treated only two of the patients died, four went on ventilators and all others recovered fully. I had to know more about this treatment and that is how I got in touch with Dr Vladimir. I reached out to him on Twitter and within a day we were communicating through WhatsApp. He answered my questions and also shared an informative document. I am writing below from what I understood after going through the document.
Dr Vladimir has been taking care of old patients in Kiryas Joel, New York for the last 16 years. There are around 35,000 people in the community and among them, Covid-19 had spread quickly. His team tested people and they found out approximately 61% of the population was Covid-19 positive which meant that around 15,000 people who were above 60 in the community were in danger.
According to the CDC, symptoms of Covid-19 may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. The clinical symptoms of Covid-19 are:
- Cough
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
or at least two of these symptoms
- Fever or chills (with or without rigors)
- New loss of taste or smell
- Myalgia
- Headache and/or sore throat
- Diarrhea
As the situation was getting worse so Dr Vladimir developed a treatment protocol in a pre-hospital setting.
- Category 1 – Any patient with shortness of breath is treated.
- Category 2 – Any patient in a high-risk category with mild symptoms is treated.
- Young, healthy and low-risk patients even with symptoms are not treated (unless their circumstances change and they fall into category 1 or 2) (as is well known, these patients likely self resolve).
Here’s his outpatient treatment regime:
- Hydroxychloroquine 200mg twice a day for 5 days and then once a week.
- Azithromycin 500mg once a day for 5 days and then once a week.
- Zinc sulfate 220mg once a day for 5 days and then once a week.
As it was not mentioned in the protocol document about how long one has to keep taking the above cocktail of drugs I asked Dr Vladamir the question. “Once a week for how many weeks?” Dr Vladamir said that “Ultimately we got to do a blood test and check for IgG antibodies but probably not so practical in poor countries. So, I would say maybe a few months. Three-Four months. Something like that.”
So from what I understood is that if you start with the above cocktail then after the initial 5 days you will have to continue to take the medicine once a week for three or four months. I will ask Dr Vladimir to verify this.
Why the above combination? Because hydroxychloroquine helps Zinc enter the cell and Zinc slows viral replication within the cell. Azithromycin prevents secondary bacterial infections.
About side-effects of taking above medicines. He mentions in the document that to his knowledge there have not been any negative side effects other than approximately 10% of patients with temporary nausea and diarrhoea.
He urgently recommends initiating treatment in the outpatient setting as soon as possible following the above regime. Based on his direct experience, the regime prevents acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), prevents the need for hospitalization and thus saves lives.

Even President Trump -the leader of the world’s most powerful country has started taking the regime mentioned above after getting a letter from Dr Vladimir ‘Zev’ Zelenko. Trump told reporters he has been taking the drug, hydroxychloroquine, and a zinc supplement daily “for about a week and a half now.”
He said “I got a letter from a doctor the other day, from Westchester, New York, around the area, he did not want anything. He just said: ‘Sir I have hundreds of patients and I give them hydroxychloroquine, I give them the z-pack, which is azithromycin, and I give them zinc, and out of the hundreds of patients, many patients, more than 300, I haven’t lost one,’” Trump said. “He said: ‘Please keep pressing that sir.’” Source – link.
